New York CNN —Walmart, the global mega-retailer that began in Arkansas in 1962, is making huge moves in 2024. It’s making investments in technology and inventory that move it into new businesses and which will alter the Walmart experience of many customers. Stock splitThe mega-retailer announced a 3-for-1 stock split that takes effect this week. A stock split means a single share gets split into multiple shares. Under the plan Walmart announced, people who own shares by close of business on February 22 will get two additional new shares of Walmart for every share they own.

The shuttering of Bed Bath & Beyond stores should provide a significant sales boost to online retailer Wayfair, according to Telsey Group. Bed Bath & Beyond filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday and is trying to auction its namesake and Buybuy Baby brands. W 6M mountain Wayfair's year-to-date performance Telsey based its analysis on several factors, such as size, store proximity to Bed Bath & Beyond locations, the mix of online sales versus store sales, and consumer demographic. Wayfair was also named by Oppenheimer as among those poised to benefit from Bed Bath & Beyond's demise. Shares of the online retailer are up nearly 9% so far this year.
Another leg down for retail earnings? But it doesn't negate the main story for retailers this year: earnings estimates have been coming down hard since the summer. Beginning in June and July, analysts began aggressively cutting retail earnings estimates for the all-important holiday season. The assumption: the Fed's aggressive rate hikes would, by the end of the year, significantly slow consumer spending and likely start a recession. Indeed, yesterday's retail sales numbers were strong, and other recent reports by Mastercard also indicate the consumer is strong.
